Kids Movies missing out on the top spot for a second week of summer.
After The Lone Ranger’s disappointing first week of sitting in 5th, Disney would be hoping their new release, Planes, could do better. By taking just over £1.7m, a high flying 2nd is exactly what they would have wanted. Planes has taken £300k more than the 3rd place 2 Guns, which is impressive but still far from the top spot.
The top honour goes to comic book action sequel, Kick-Ass 2. Taking an average of £5,139 at each of its UK locations it managed to take just short of £2.5m. Focusing mainly on the teenage and young adult audiences seem to have been key to its success, as was the case last week for Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa, which is still bringing in the audiences in a respectable 7th place.
Still in the top 15 after six and eight weeks respectively are Monsters University in 6th and Despicable Me 2 in 10th. Both are now in the top 10 highest grossing films of the year, 10th and 3rd respectively, with both set to stay in that position until the school holidays end.
It’s looking to be about the power of teenage girls next week with the release of One Direction: This is Us. But for those above the age of fifteen, or with a Y chromosome, there’s action from Elysium, comedy from We’re the Millers or drama from What Maisie Knew but for us at FilmAttic it will all be about Jurassic Park 3D.
