Matt Damon climbs to the top of the cinema rankings.
Sci-Fi Action flick, Elysium, dominated the Box Office this weekend, annihilating the competition. Achieving over £3m on it’s opening weekend, it more than doubled 2nd place contender We’re The Millers – a clear indication of grown-ups off work and heading to the cinema.
The other first weekender included The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, in a decent 4th place, as an addition to comedy We’re the Millers which has a £1.5m total gross to date. As City of Bones is the first adaptation of a 5 novel series (soon to be 6), we’re particularly hopeful of future success for this potential new franchise.
With the school holidays almost over, we’re expecting kid’s films to drop significantly, with Planes, Monsters University, Despicable Me 2 and The Smurfs 2 all falling in this category after generating a combined £43m for Universal, £31m for Disney and £10m for Sony Pictures since their release.
The two significant releases over the next week include the Dwayne Johnson and Mark Wahlberg vehicle, Pain and Gain, and the British boy band documentary, One Direction: This Is Us. Unlikely to draw the same crowd, next week’s Box Office figures will make for interesting viewing to see who comes out on top of the head to head. To make things more interesting both titles will be released on August 30th.
