British comedy fans were out in full force this weekend to spending their hard earned cash on Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa which generated over £2m in it’s first week. Attracting so much attention on it’s opening weekend is telling of the popularity of Coogan’s character, and is likely to be around for a little while longer. Closely behind were Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters and Grown Ups 2 – both also in their opening weekend.

Significantly lower in 5th place was the opening weekend of Disney’s The Lone Ranger. Despite being available in many more locations than the aforementioned top 3, it only managed to rake in £1.3m.

This weekend also saw further success for The Smurfs 2 and Monsters University with the continuing school holidays – see last week’s Box Office Roundup, Everybody Likes a Blue Movie, for more information.

Other films of note in the top 10 include James Wan’s The Conjuring, in it’s second week but still made more than The Lone Ranger, and Paul Feig’s The Heat with a 62% decrease since it’s opening last week managing just under £1m.

Opening Next week

Unsurprising for the school holidays we see Disney’s Planes released; set in the same animated world as the majorly successful Cars. Alongside this is the highly anticipated, Kick-Ass 2, and the Denzel Washington & Mark Wahlberg action flick, 2 Guns.
