Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs sails ahead of Captain Philips to top this weeks box office
In its debut week, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 has taken hold of the audience’s imagination, as well as appealing to the audience of last week’s number one, Turbo. Again, the first placed film took more than £3.5m with ease, but Sony will likely be disheartened that Cloudy 2 took £200,000 less than Turbo. However Cloudy 2 should have more longevity at the box office with no new contenders for the young audience due to be released next week.
Also in its first week is Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa, which is seemingly punching above its weight taking just short of £2m, that’s £800k more than Ender’s Game which stars Hollywood heavyweight, Harrison Ford, and top British actor, Sir Ben Kingsley.
One Chance had a solid first week for a small British movie taking £717,000 and will be hoping to have a consistent few weeks due to the couple’s audience. Philomena will be its main competition next week and may split the audience.
There should be no real competition this weekend, with the latest in the Avengers franchise, Thor: The Dark World, being released on the 30th October. Chris Hemsworth completes his year of impressive films after a cameo in Star Trek Into Darkness and a striking performance in Rush, and now returns to his Marvel character, Thor. Anything below the top spot will be a disappointment for the Marvel team.
For those not fancying an action adventure with Earth’s favourite Nordic god, Philomena, starring Steve Coogan and Dame Judy Dench offers a sound alternative. Philomena is the story of a journalist who gets involved with a woman’s search for her taken son. It’ll be a successful weekend for the small film if it manages to reach the top 5, and from a neutral point it would be good to see two great British actors do well against such big competition.
